VPN for Android TV, Google TV & Firestick

Put a UK residential IP on the big screen. OwlGate installs on Android TV boxes, Google TV and Fire TV Sticks so BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Sky work from anywhere in the world — with a remote-friendly layout and no logs.

Set-up in four steps

1. Get the app on the TV

Android TV and Google TV: search 'OwlGate' in the Play Store on the device. Fire TV: install Downloader, enable installs from unknown sources, then fetch the signed APK from owlgate.uk/download/android.

2. Sign in once

Use the pairing code shown on the TV rather than typing a password with the remote. Free accounts work straight away; Pro unlocks every tree house.

3. Pick a UK tree house

London, Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh give the most reliable results for iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Sky. Latency is shown live next to each location.

4. Turn on always-on

Enable always-on VPN and the kill switch so the tunnel restarts with the TV. Streaming apps then never see your local IP, even after a reboot.

What works on the TV

  • BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and My5 from abroad
  • Sky Go, NOW and Discovery+ on supported boxes
  • 4K streaming with WireGuard's low overhead
  • Always-on VPN and kill switch after reboot
  • Router setup for TVs that cannot sideload
  • One-click switching between UK tree houses

Android TV VPN FAQ

How do I install a VPN on Android TV?

On Google TV and Android TV, install OwlGate from the Play Store on the device itself, sign in with your account and pick a UK tree house. On Fire TV Stick, use the Downloader app to sideload the signed OwlGate APK, then allow installs from unknown sources for Downloader.

Does OwlGate work on a Fire TV Stick?

Yes. The APK runs on Fire TV Stick (2nd gen and later), Fire TV Cube and Fire TV built-in televisions running Fire OS 6 or newer. The layout is built for a D-pad remote, so connecting takes three clicks.

Can I watch BBC iPlayer on Android TV from abroad?

Connect to London, Manchester or Edinburgh before opening iPlayer, and clear the app's cache the first time. OwlGate uses residential UK IPs, so broadcasters see an ordinary household connection.

What if my TV box has no Play Store or sideloading?

Import an OwlGate WireGuard configuration into your router instead. Every device on that network — TV boxes, consoles, smart TVs — then uses the tunnel while only using one device slot.

Will a VPN slow down 4K streaming?

WireGuard adds very little overhead. On a 40 Mbps connection most users see under 10% loss, which is comfortably above the 25 Mbps UK broadcasters need for 4K.
